Schedule for the 2025 county elections and municipal elections

County elections and municipal elections are held every four years on the third Sunday of April. If the third Sunday of April is Easter Day or the Sunday following Easter Day, the elections are held on the Sunday preceding Easter.

The next county elections and municipal elections will be held on Sunday 13 April 2025. Accordingly, the other important dates are as follows:

October 2024:

13 October (Sunday) The campaign period of candidates and political parties under the Act on a Candidate’s Election Funding and the Act on Political Parties begins.

November 2024:

30 November (Saturday) The minimum number of seats in each county council and municipal council is determined based on the numbers of residents recorded in the Population Information System.

December 2024:

31 December (Tuesday) Deadline for the wellbeing services counties and municipalities to submit any notifications concerning the number of seats in the county councils and municipal councils to the Ministry of Justice

February 2025:

21 February (Friday) Date for collecting data for the voting register (determining the wellbeing services county and municipality in which each person has the right to vote)

March 2025:

4 March (Tuesday) Deadline for submitting candidate applications (in respect of country elections to county election boards and in respect of municipal elections to central municipal election boards)

13 March (Thursday) The nomination of candidates is confirmed and the candidate numbers are published.

April 2025:

1 April (Tuesday) The voting register becomes legally valid and registration for at-home voting ends at 16.00.

2–8 April Advance voting in Finland

2–5 April Advance voting abroad

11 April (Friday) Postal voting covering envelopes must arrive at the appropriate central municipal election boards by 19.00.

16 April Election results are confirmed. 

June 2025:

1 June (Sunday) The elected county councils and municipal councils begin their work.
